A short introduction
Organisation Development Consultant | Management Educator | Practitioner-Scholar
Jan van Rooyen is a management consultant, educator, and writer with more than 35 years experience at the intersection of organisation development, systems thinking, strategic management, and change. His work is grounded in a single conviction: that effective leadership in a complex, rapidly shifting environment demands genuinely internalised frameworks — not tools selected from a menu, but lenses through which one learns to see.
Qualifications
Qualified in Biological Sciences – Biochemistry & Psychology (UJ) Training Management (UJ), Business Management (UNISA-SBL and Wits), and Leadership Coaching (Wits), Jan has built his career across large and small manufacturing and service organisations, government institutions, multinational corporations, and NGOs — in South Africa and across the African continent. Since 1996 he has operated as an independent consultant and has participated in and led numerous change interventions of significant scale and complexity. He is equally at home in the boardroom and the classroom, having lectured in MBA and Management Development programmes on strategic and operational management, organisation development, change management, project management, governance, and leadership.
Reflections
His Reflections on Business series — published on vanrooyen.info — gives public expression to this worldview. The series is not a collection of independent posts. It is a sustained argument: that organisations, strategies, cultures, and change processes are best understood as interconnected systems; that most management failure can be traced to interventions made at the wrong level or with the wrong assumptions; and that the organisations most likely to endure are those that develop the capacity to think, adapt, and integrate — not those that rotate most efficiently through the latest frameworks.
Approach
What distinguishes Jan’s approach is its integrative character. He is constitutionally sceptical of disciplinary boundaries and pre-packaged solutions — suspicious of the comfort that familiar playbooks provide, and equally suspicious of frameworks that survive in documents rather than in practice. His thinking draws on a wide intellectual range: from Aristotle and Heraclitus, through Adam Smith and Karl Marx, to Peter Drucker, Peter Senge, Dave Snowden, and Donella Meadows. These are not citations of convenience. They are the materials from which a consistent and coherent worldview has been constructed over decades of practice and reflection.
Jan writes and consults from a place of hard-won practical experience and genuine intellectual curiosity. His underlying drive — consistent across more than 35 years — is the optimisation of organisations through the development of the people within them. That is not a mission statement. It is simply what the work has always been about.
