Who we are

How I handle your information

Effective date: 30 April 2026  ·  Last updated: 30 April 2026

This policy explains what information I collect when you visit this site, why I collect it, and what I do with it. I’ve written it to be readable — not just legally defensible.

1. Who I am

This website is operated by Jan van Rooyen, a blog and personal info sharing site located at  vanrooyen.info. I am the sole data controller for information collected through this site.

If you have any questions about this policy or how your data is handled, you can reach me at the contact details listed at the end of this document.

2. What I collect and why

I collect only what I need to operate the site and communicate with readers who reach out. Specifically:

  • Email addresses — when you subscribe to updates or submit a contact form. I use these only to respond to your message or send the content you signed up for.
  • Usage data — through analytics tools (described in Section 3), I collect aggregate information about how visitors use this site (pages visited, approximate location by country, device type). I do not collect personally identifiable usage data.

I do not collect payment information, government IDs, or any sensitive personal data. I do not build profiles on individual visitors.

3. Cookies and analytics

This site uses Monster insights and Google Analytics to understand how readers find and use the site.

Where I use cookies for any purpose (such as remembering preferences), they are strictly functional. I do not use advertising cookies or sell any tracking data to third parties.

Most browsers allow you to refuse or delete cookies through their settings. Doing so will not affect your ability to read this site.

4. How I use your email address

If you provide your email address, I use it for the purpose you specified when submitting it — typically to reply to a message or to send new posts and occasional updates.

I will never:

  • Share or sell your email address to any third party.
  • Send you unsolicited commercial messages.
  • Add you to mailing lists you did not opt into.

You can unsubscribe from any email communications at any time by replying to any message or using the unsubscribe link included in each email.

5. Who I share data with

I do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. Your data may pass through third-party services I use to operate the site, including:

  • Hosting provider — xneelo.co.za, which stores and serves this site’s files.
  • Email service — [e.g. Mailchimp, ConvertKit, Buttondown], which manages subscriber lists and sends newsletters.
  • Analytics —  google analytics and monster insights, as above.
  • Spam – Visitor comments are checked through an automated spam detection service.

Each of these providers operates under their own privacy policies. I choose providers that take data protection seriously, but I encourage you to review their policies if you have concerns.

6. How long I keep your data

Email addresses are retained for as long as you remain a subscriber or our correspondence is active. If you ask me to delete your information, I will do so within a reasonable timeframe (typically within 30 days) and confirm when it’s done.

Aggregate analytics data (which contains no personally identifiable information) may be retained indefinitely for the purpose of understanding long-term trends.

7. Your rights

Regardless of where you are located, you have the right to:

  • Know what personal data I hold about you.
  • Request a copy of your data in a portable format.
  • Ask me to correct inaccurate information.
  • Ask me to delete your data.
  • Withdraw consent at any time (e.g. by unsubscribing).

To exercise any of these rights, contact me using the details in Section 9. I do not require you to justify your request, and I will not charge a fee.

8. Changes to this policy

If I make material changes to this policy, I will update the effective date at the top of this page. For significant changes, I may also notify subscribers via email. Continued use of this site after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
